Hellooo, out there I;m Ralf, I live in Toronto, Canada. I've been involved with, or in Chrysler product cars since the mid 70's. I do ground up restoration on special interest cars. But my heart really lays in Mopars. I own a 91 Lebaron GTC conv 2.5 turbo, as well as a 89 Daytona Shelby turbo 2, A520. You guys might not like this, but I plan to install the T2 along with the manual trans into the 91. My special interest is metal fabrication, butt welding (mig, tig, and gas) bondoless repairs. I am in no way trying to promote my skills here, just letting you know what my background is. I'm probably a bit older than most you guys, but you can pick my brain if you like. I might be able to help in ways you would never expect. Thanks.

Wow, I didn't expect any response that fast! I was looking for any pertinent info regarding A520 tranny. I want to convert the 91 Lebaron from auto to manual. Had to make sure the clutch pedal will work from the Daytona in the Lebaron. I was under the assumption that the Daytona had a 555 but found out not. When I found out, I automatically looked up what the deal was involving Shelby Daytona's, I just assumed that it would of been a 555. That is when I stumbled into this site. I will be posting photo's of the Shelby since I will be either parting it or selling what I don't need. I have other Mopar projects on the go as well. 79 Ramcharger 4x4 22000 original miles. 86 GLH etc.

I believe the motor is correct, the only thing is that the previous owner did was a valve job. That was about 12,000 miles before I purchased it. Everything else seems intact. He had the rad recored about a year earlier, before my purchase. The timing couldn't of been any better, since I installed a brand new dealer rad in the Lebaron a month before the Daytona purchase. But I might just use the intercooler from the Daytona temporarily, if I come across any suitable piece that might meet the criteria. I'm not sure which way to go yet. The Daytona's boost was up around 15psi on the drive home. Is it my imagination, or is it difficult for the average shmuck working in a garage to get the plumbing right? It never fails to surprise me that the vacuum lines are not installed right. This can lead to real issues, if not addressed in time. Wouldn't surprise me if a transmission shop pulled a switch on the car in the process of having the clutch done. I know that more often than not people complain of their cars not steering the same way after having the rack replaced. The garage usually doesn't pay attention to the difference in gearing, or really care for that matter.

Hi this mustbe a new forum Empty Re: Hi this mustbe a new forum

Post by boosted86daytona January 11th 2011, 2:26 am

Welcome!

For all TII cars, including the Shelby Daytonas, they got A555 transmissions stock in them, except for 90+ Which got A568 transmissions in them.

The Shelby Daytonas in fact got two different treatments. For the TII cars, they got the 555, but for TI cars they got the 520 or the Automatic A413.

A picture would be nice, but it sounds lie someone had tapped the intake for the charge air temp sensor and added everything into it. It is a fairly common swap. A good indication of this swap would be to look at the 60-pin connector on your SMEC and see if there are two wires that are different, out of place, or have been soldered/modified in any way. The only difference (besides the actual parts) between the TI and TII was the addition of those two wires, in 88-89.

A VIN of the daytona will tell the true background of the car, and tell you what it originally was once. I can look it up and have the answer for you almost immediately.

If it was running at 15lbs of boost, there are two things you need to look for. First, look at the vacuum line on the wastegate can and trace it back to the manifold. Does it pass through a solenoid on the passenger fenderwell? or does it have any special bleeds or metering devices on it? A common mod many people do is whats known as adding a Grainger Valve, a type of manual boost controller. If you do not see any said boost controllers or bleeds, then you more than likely have a recalibrated SMEC, or a Mopar Stage II/Super 60 SMEC. The Mopar Stage II cals were set at 15 lbs of boost. I am unsure of the boost rating of the Super60 SMEC, but I know it is at least 15 lbs.

Hope this helps you in your eternal quest for more power!!!!

To post pictures from photobucket, click on the pictures you weant us to see, so they come up i their own page, then on the left hand side (depending on how your browser is set up it may show up on the right) near the bottom of the page there will be a box that has 4 different lines of code, such as HTML, URL, IMG code, and another one under it. Copy and paste the [IMG] code line out of that box, and post it into here, then the pics will show up fine

VIN#IC23BG74A3KG270600. There is no bleed on the wastegate vacuum line. It goes straight to the vacuum solenoid. There is always another angle to consider, maybe the gauge isn't very accurate. Although I know what 15 psi feels like, and it doesn't feel far off.

Those wires on the 60 pin connector look original, looks like I'm the first one to ever touch it. I will take some photo's of this engine compartment and load it in here, as soon as I can. I removed the connector cover to take a good look, to make no mistake. Please let me know if the vin# checks out. Thank You.

Thank you for the response. I never had any doubt regarding the fact it was T2. I never looked at the tag on the trans before last week, I just assumed it was an A555. I'm parting the body out since I need the motor and trans for my other car. Plus I just have tooo many cars presently. The only exception is that I find another Daytona, this time T3. There are still some of these cars around. I know someone who bought one recently, but he is an complete ass. I'd rather stay away from people like that. Can usually find fairly clean examples for not too much money. Toronto has on of the most diverse automotive population. We have the second highest population of Ferrari in North America, outside Los Angeles. But there is no shortage of special interest cars here, someone was always willing to spend the money. Why do you think I had so many wonderful rides? I haven't filled you in with the rest. I have been all over the States, and never seen quite the variety any where except in LA. I have to use the motor in the Lebaron since I have so much money in it. The body is so solid in comparison, I never liked taking collectible cars apart unless they were going to the right sources.

The breathing capacity is so much greater on a T3, I'm really surprised I wasn't into these cars when they were new. I have been servicing a friends 86 GLH since the late 80's. That car had constant problems with head gaskets. So I finally got smart and replaced the gasket with a solid copper one, had the block decked and O- ringed the block. Problem solved. this car has had some major improvements made. Before this rebuild it got 16 psi. This setup has been completely changed , I can't see anything below 24psi. I will fill you in. This car got an A555 conversion as well.

I worked in a machine shop for a couple of years, this gave me a completely different insight to how to build motors that would last. My own 340 never had the slightest of problems since I assembled it in 81. Outside a fuel pump. I beat it hard 4:56 rear gear 4 speed car. It idle no lower than 1100rpm. Would get rubber at 50 mph in fourth just punching it. I bought it in 77, sold it in 01. Someone else I know has the car today. I have photos of the car today, maybe I should load a couple here as well. Uh, maybe not, it's not a Daytona.

I'm truly surprised that the VNT wasn't given an intercooler. I can't believe the amount of friction the air had coming out of that.

2.2 engines were never given balance shafts, it was the 2.5 that got those, because of the extra weight of the crank counterweights

They make a kit to eliminate the balance shafts. But the idle suffers as a result. Otherwise it doesn't really have any negative effect. My Lebaron has a 2.5 in it. It had the balance shafts removed. I wanted to return it to the shaft setup but whoever did the motor welded the oiling holes up, and I tried to undo it but I would of had metal shavings all over, so I decided to leave it alone. The way it worked out was, I sent it in for an emission test and the garage beat the snot out of it. When I got the car back they had spun a couple of rod bearings. That is when I decided to use the T2 motor for the Lebaron.

I guess the motor in the Lebaron (original one) 2.5 Turbo would've been a Turbo 4 since the car is a 91.

Why did they install balance shafts in 2.2 engines? My surprise that they would install them in turbo 3 engines, those were 2.2 as well, weren't they?

Regarding 90 Lebarons, what model did it fall under? Seems there is no shortage of those here, (dependent on the year I suppose) I sure see enough of them. It isn't all that easy to tell the years of the car when your driving, or moving. There was no shortage of Daytona either, they were everywhere. Probably a good reason for not paying close attention to them when they were new! Now when they start to disappear they are a lot more interesting, or appealing.
